Investment Management
Sustaining capital with purpose.
Capital should have a defined role. Before investment decisions are made, Leap Dock establishes what the assets are intended to support and how readily funds may be required.
The priority may be to generate a dependable income stream or protect purchasing power across a long holding period. A mandate may also need to sit alongside a business interest, a trust arrangement, a forthcoming transaction, or an anticipated change of residence.
Leap Dock begins with that context and allows the portfolio to reflect the life around it.
Our Investment Philosophy
We take a patient perception of capital and what it should do. Markets will always create noise, yet short-term movement should not dictate every decision.
Our approach is founded on thorough research and close attention to valuation. We seek investments with a sound underlying case, then retain the freedom to reassess when the facts change.
We do not regard activity as a measure of service. A portfolio should change when there is a compelling reason to make a change.
-
Building The Mandate
Each mandate is developed from the ground up. The process starts by establishing the purpose of the capital and the parameters within which it should be managed.
This includes:
- Required liquidity and expected cash calls
- Preferred income level, where relevant
- Time horizon for the mandate
- Existing holdings and how they are structured
- Tax position, with input from appointed advisers
- Restrictions that may apply to the portfolio
- Appetite for market exposure
- The role of the portfolio within wider arrangements
The result is an investment brief that is personal to each client. This provides a reference point for the portfolio and for further discussions as circumstances evolve.
-
Portfolio Construction
A portfolio should be able to withstand uncertainty without losing sight of its purpose.
Leap Dock considers a range of investment routes, according to the mandate:
- Listed equities and fixed-income securities
- Carefully selected funds
- Cash and short-duration instruments
- Portfolio transition arrangements
- Investments held through trusts or other structures
Each potential holding is considered in the context of the wider portfolio. We also examine concentration risk, especially where wealth has been created through a private company or a substantial existing position.
-
Investment Audit & Oversight
Leap Dock maintains oversight of existing investment arrangements and supports review where circumstances require it.
Our work may include:
- Mandate review
- Portfolio assessment
- Manager evaluation
- Manager selection
- Tender coordination
- Meeting participation
- Reporting review
- Independent perspective
Selected Investment Mandates
Founder “A”
After selling a majority interest in a specialist software business, Mr. A received proceeds that had to be invested without disrupting the next stage of the company’s development.
Much of the family’s wealth had previously been tied to the business. The sale created liquidity, but also introduced a new question: how should his capital be positioned when future business commitments are still possible?
Leap Dock began by reviewing the sale terms, the family’s existing arrangements, and the expected demands on capital. A liquidity reserve was set aside for known commitments, and the remaining proceeds were invested through a mandate designed for a longer holding period.
The portfolio was phased into the market rather than deployed at once. This gave Mr. A space to consider future business participation without leaving the entire sum idle.
We remain involved as the family’s position is expected to change. Investment decisions will be reviewed alongside the requirements of the remaining business interest.
Family “R”
The R family held substantial financial assets across several accounts, established at different points over two decades.
Each account had been managed separately. Their holdings significantly overlapped and the reporting arrived in different formats. No one could offer a simple or complete analysis of the family’s overall exposure.
Leap Dock conducted a comprehensive review of the accounts and the structures through which they were held. We worked alongside the family’s tax advisers to identify constraints before any changes were made.
A single investment brief was then agreed. Duplicated holdings were reduced drastically over time, with care given to tax consequences and transaction costs. Their reporting was consolidated so that the family could see its position in one place.
The R family now has a clearer understanding of its invested capital and a more deliberate framework for future decisions.
